Global Learning Without the Plane Ticket: Virtual Study Abroad
For decades, study abroad has been considered the gold standard for global learning. Immersing students in another culture, language, and environment offers transformative personal and academic growth. But traditional travel-based study abroad isn’t accessible to everyone as cost, time, family obligations, or geopolitical restrictions often get in the way.
Now, technology is removing many of those barriers. Virtual exchange, also known as online or digital study abroad, connects students and faculty across borders through online collaboration tools. These exchanges enable participants to collaborate on projects, share perspectives, and foster cross-cultural understanding without requiring a passport or plane ticket.
Virtual Exchange in Action at UF CJC
Two projects in my college highlight how powerful these experiences can be.
Graduate-Level Virtual Exchange: Storytelling Across Cultures
Dr. Colleen McEdwards, a faculty member in UF CJC Online, and Juan-Pablo Osman from Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia, each offered video storytelling courses. McEdwards focused on nonfiction storytelling for journalism and public relations, while Osman emphasized fiction techniques for film. Students collaborated across time zones to analyze and compare narrative structure, visual style, and cultural influences on storytelling.

Undergraduate Virtual Exchange: Communicating Soccer Globally
In another project, UF’s Department of Media Production, Management, and Technology partnered with the University of Brighton in the United Kingdom. Students in Eric Esterline and Roxane Coche’s class on global perspectives of soccer teamed up with Professor Owen Evans’ course on career development. Together, they examined how the world’s most popular sport is covered in each country by comparing media framing, audience engagement, and cultural context.
These exchanges allowed students to learn from peers abroad, broaden professional perspectives, and gain international experience, all from wherever students are logged in.
Why Virtual Exchange Works
While nothing can fully replace travel, virtual exchange offers unique educational advantages that complement and, in some ways, surpass traditional study abroad. Here are four key reasons to consider integrating it into your course:
Accessibility and Inclusion: Virtual exchange eliminates financial and logistical barriers. Students with jobs, families, or disabilities can still gain meaningful international experience without the cost of flights, housing, or visas.
